An Ambitious Form of UK/EU Cooperation on Foreign, Security and Defence Policy – Why and How
This was the title of a talk given by Professor Sir Alan Dashwood KC at a seminar jointly organised by The City Law School and the European and International Analysts Group (EIAG) on 28 February 2024.
The theme of the seminar was “Rebuilding Relations between the UK and the EU: a Security Cooperation Pact and Other Ideas for Strengthening the Relationship”. Other speakers at the seminar were Sir Julian King, the UK’s last EU Commissioner and a former UK Ambassador to France and to Ireland, Baroness Smith of Newnham, Professor of European Politics at Cambridge and Liberal Democrat Defence Spokesperson in the House of Lords, and Lord Hannay of Chiswick, former UK Permanent Representative to the EU and to the United Nations. A paper by Sir Julian King entitled ‘The case for an Ambitious EU/UK Security Cooperation Pact’, published on the EIAG’s website, provided background to the seminar. It is referred to at various points in Sir Alan’s talk.
A lightly revised transcript of Sir Alan’s talk can be found here.
