Lia Moses
"There is real weight and gravitas to her performance." "Lia is incredibly strong in all areas. Her attention to detail and trial preparation is spot on, and her advocacy is very strong. Lia also has great strategic knowledge on how to position things with the Court, how certain arguments will be perceived by a judge, and what points to take and let go."

Lia Moses is a barrister practising in commercial dispute resolution. She has been recognised as a leading junior in both the Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners. Her core specialisms are product liability, consumer and banking and financial services law. Mass claims (whether portfolios of similar claims, ‘omnibus claims’ or claims subject to a formal group litigation order) are a common theme with these areas of law and therefore her practice.
In recent years, Lia has been instructed in the Pan NOx Emissions Litigation (on behalf of the Mercedes-Benz Defendants) as well as other claims and sets of claims involving allegations of (i) defective products (ranging from sofas to medical devices), (ii) the mis-selling of products (ranging from credit and insurance products to solar panels and timeshares), (ii) connected lender liability (i.e. under sections 56 and 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974), (iv) unfairness under section 140A of the 1974 Act, and (v) prohibited practices under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008. Much of that work has been in the PPI litigation context in its various iterations (namely, mis-selling and undisclosed commission). She also has extensive experience of undisclosed commission litigation in other contexts (e.g. mortgage and motor finance).
Lia has experience, mostly from the early years of her practice, in Chambers’ wider practice areas including employment, personal injury, administrative, property and insolvency law. She continues to accept instructions in these areas and her familiarity with them continues to be relevant (and adds to her ability to deliver a comprehensive service to clients) within her core specialisms.

Expertise
Consumer Credit and Consumer Contract
Lia is regularly instructed to advise and represent clients in matters involving the provisions of the Consumer Credit Act 1974, Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 and the FCA Handbook. Her clients include most major UK lenders as well as smaller lenders. She occasionally acts for borrowers.
Lia advises on non-contentious regulatory issues as well as in the context of contentious litigation. She is regularly instructed to draft pleadings and applications (e.g. to strike out, or for summary judgment), attend case management hearings, allocation hearings, application hearings and to conduct trials in consumer credit matters.
She has experience of isolated claims and of groups of claims where multiple claimants are represented by the same firm of solicitors.
Having worked on various consumer projects during her time at the Law Commission, Lia began her practice with a detailed understanding of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and the law on consumer protection more generally. She is now regularly instructed in a wide range of consumer claims brought against lenders under s.75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 as well as consumer contract disputes that do not involve a consumer credit element.
Lia’s work in the fields of consumer credit and consumer contract often raises issues relating to the General Data Protection Regulation 2016/679 (“GDPR”) and the Data Protection Act 2018 (“DPA”). Recently, she succeeded in defending a claim against a major UK lender for breach of the individual right of access under Art.15 of the GDPR. She is familiar with the provisions of the GDPR and the DPA and is able to assist clients with matters in which they are engaged.
