Lucy McCormick Co-Authors UKJT Legal Statement on AI Harms

On 7 July 2026, the UK Jurisdiction Taskforce (UKJT) published its Legal Statement on Liability for AI Harms. Lucy McCormick was one of the co-authors, alongside Matthew Lavy KC, Richard Munden, Isabel Barter and Jacob Turner, in consultation with a wider expert group. It was launched to a packed audience at the Law Society.

The UKJT is an initiative of LawTech UK, supported by the Ministry of Justice and chaired by Sir Geoffrey Vos MR. It is tasked with promoting the use of English law, and the UK’s jurisdictions for technology and digital innovation. The purpose of the UKJT is to clarify key questions regarding the legal status of, and basic legal principles applicable to, novel technologies under English law.

The Legal Statement on AI Harms is intended to provide a clear framework to address complex questions arising from liability for the decisions of AI systems and to dispel legal uncertainty, in a context where few cases have yet reached the courts. The conclusions of previous UKJT Legal Statements on cryptocurrency have been cited and followed by the English Courts and reflected in subsequent legislation.
