Benn Sheridan highly commended by the Bar Council in its law reform essay competition
Benn Sheridan has been highly commended by the Bar Council in its 2024 essay competition for his analysis of collective redress regimes in the English courts.
His essay ‘An opt-out class action regime for environmental claims’ examines procedural hurdles that claimants who suffer environmental harm face in seeking civil remedies. It proposes a statutory solution: a class action regime, drawing on Competition law.
Benn says:
“I chose this topic because (a) I intend to develop a practice at the Bar in the group litigation and environmental law spheres, and (b) having considered ways in which these sectors might benefit from practical, expeditious reform, I concluded (after some time in the library) that the statutory competition regime might furnish Parliament with a template for an opt-out class action procedure to deal with mass environmental claims proportionately.”
