Documenting Atrocity Crimes against the Rohingya in Myanmar’s Rakhine State
Jonathan Worboys is part of a Public International Law & Policy Group (“PILPG”) team that authors a report on documenting atrocity crimes committed against the Rohingya in Myanmar’s Rakhine State.
In March and April 2018, at the request of the U.S. Department of State, PILPG undertook an unprecedented, large-scale and comprehensive human rights investigation mission in the refugee camps and settlement areas in Eastern Bangladesh. The purpose of this investigation mission was to provide an accurate account of the patterns of abuse and atrocity crimes perpetrated against the Rohingya in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, and to help inform the policy decisions of the U.S. government related to accountability in Myanmar. In total, the investigation conducted 1,024 interviews with Rohingya refugees, and produced more than 15,000 pages of documentation.
Phase 1 of the work has produced a factual findings report, which can be downloaded here. A legal analysis is to follow in October 2018.
