Lucy McCormick to co-author ‘Law and Driverless Cars’

On the 1st July, the first known driverless car fatality was announced, with the news that a Tesla driver had died in a crash while using ‘Autopilot’ mode. It has been reported that the software failed to register the white side of a tractor trailer against a brightly lit sky, so the brake was not applied. Tesla has emphasised that to use the ‘Autopilot’ mode, drivers must click through an acknowledgement box which warns that ‘Autopilot is an assist feature that requires you to keep your hands on the steering wheel at all times,” and that “you need to maintain control and responsibility for your vehicle’ while using it. This incident, while enormously sad for the individuals involved, has prompted a great deal of legal interest for the product liability and insurance issues it raises.

Against this background, Henderson Chambers is pleased to announce that Lucy McCormick has signed a contract with Routledge to co-author a book entitled ‘Law and Driverless Cars’. The co-authors are both academics at Exeter University, Matthew Channon and Kyriaki Noussia. The book is expected late 2017/early 2018, to allow it to accommodate the government’s promised new driverless car legislation out in summer 2017.
