Richard graduated from Oxford university with a First in Philosophy, Politics and Economics and then studied for an M.Phil in International Relations at Cambridge. Before coming to the Bar he worked for a newspaper in Lebanon. Since joining Henderson Chambers in 2007 he has gained experience in a number of areas, particularly employment, property and consumer credit.
Employment
Richard has undertaken cases involving a number of areas of employment law, including unfair dismissal and constructive dismissal, race, disability and religious discrimination, redundancy and breach of contract. He also has drafting and advisory experience relating to TUPE transfers and whistleblowing. He has been instructed by local authorities and corporate clients, and has acted on behalf of both claimants and respondents.
Finance and Consumer Credit
Richard has advisory, drafting and advocacy experience in relation to a wide range of consumer credit, finance and general contract law. He has experience of drafting and court advocacy in the consumer credit field, representing both creditors and debtors in county courts and the High Court. He has dealt with various areas including default notices, provision of copy agreements, the law of assignment, and unfair relationships. He also has particular drafting experience in defending payment protection insurance claims. In the wider field of finance he has acted in personal and corporate insolvency matters, and has advised on particular issues including banks’ duty of care, fraud, cheques and guarantees.
Property
Richard has been instructed in service charge disputes and housing disrepair cases, including claims with a personal injury element. He is frequently instructed in possession actions against tenants and trespassers, and has also acted in mortgage repossession cases. He has appeared in the High Court on applications for injunctive relief relating to rights of way. He has acted in several anti-social behavior cases in which injunctions or possession orders were sought.
Personal Injury
Richard has acted in several PI cases involving road traffic accidents, slipping and tripping and accidents at work. He also has experience in more complicated multi-track cases.
Public, Administrative and Local Government
Richard has acted in a variety of cases involving public law, and has appeared in the Administrative Court as well as county courts. He has acted on behalf of local authorities in an advisory role, including on secondment, and has also been instructed by publicly funded clients in relation to issues including housing and mental capacity.
