Elizabeth is a double graduate of the London School of Economics and Political Science and Oxford University, having read for a BSc in Social Anthropology and an MA in English Literature (Romantics) before completing the Graduate Diploma in Law and the Bar Vocational Course. Elizabeth joined Chambers in 2009 and has experience in a wide range of specialisms, accepting instructions across all areas of Chambers’ work.

Elizabeth spent a period of her pupillage working in the Brussels office of the international corporate law firm McDermott, Will and Emery, gaining experience of anti-dumping proceedings, anti-trust and both contentious and non-contentious competition issues and international trade problems. More recently she has worked alongside US trial attorneys developing jury advocacy and expert witness handling skills. As a tenant Elizabeth has been involved in a wide range of paper and court work spanning contractual, employment, public law, property, product liability, health and safety and regulatory disputes. Elizabeth has represented clients in a range of litigation – from personal injury to property actions to jury inquests to Court of Protection work. Elizabeth is familiar with drafting across the range of Chambers’ areas of practice, including, in particular, Freedom of Information responses, procurement advice, personal injury schedules and counter schedules of loss, advice on jurisdictional issues, boundary and highway claims, questions involving mental health law, and product liability and professional disciplinary matters as well as consumer credit and hire agreements. 

Common Law and Personal Injury

Elizabeth has been instructed to represent clients in personal injury cases including disputes in the Court of Protection. She has drafted Opinions and pleadings in relation to complex loss including fatal accidents, claims for psychiatric injury, pension rights, dependency and Smith v Manchester awards. She has done extensive public sector work on employee personal injury and assault claims involving alleged human rights breaches. She also has broader commercial experience of drafting in relation to medical and financial negligence, claims for breach of contract and misrepresentation and issues arising from the conversion of goods as well as trust, guarantor and estate claims. She has also worked on defence procurement.

Commercial and Consumer Credit

Within the field of consumer finance Elizabeth has advised and represented banks and other institutions in matters arising out of consumer credit legislation.  Elizabeth has been instructed in relation to allegations of the improper execution of credit agreements and non-compliance, unfair terms in consumer contracts and penalty clauses and misrepresentation. Elizabeth regularly appears in credit hire cases and has experience of corporate and personal insolvency matters, winding-up petitions, bankruptcy and applications arising out of statutory demands. Elizabeth was led by Patrick Green in the case of CITB v Beacon Roofing Ltd  2011 in the High Court, which dealt with the question of the purpose and interpretation of the wording of a contract and the scope of an industrial levy.  She is also regularly involved in cases based on alleged breaches of the Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulations 1999 and the Consumer Protection from unfair trading Regulations 2008.

Property

Elizabeth is regularly instructed to advise and draft pleadings in relation to boundary disputes, rights of way, restrictive covenants and easements, dilapidations and disrepair, adverse possession, bona vacantia and land registration issues. She is involved in many aspects of landlord and tenant litigation – having represented private landlords, local authorities and commercial and residential tenants. Cases regularly include disputed mortgage, arrears, and anti-social behaviour possessions and injunctions, breach of covenant issues including contractual set off, succession rights and spouse and family claims. She also has experience of telecommunications disputes, beneficial ownership claims and trusts. She has appeared in the Leasehold Valuation Tribunal in relation to the reasonableness of service charges and costs.

Employment

Elizabeth has acted for both claimants and respondents. She has dealt with Court and paper work involving unfair capability and conduct dismissals, TUPE, redundancy, race and disability discrimination and harassment claims. Elizabeth was most recently involved in a complex bullying and harassment claim through the course of proceedings – from drafting an opinion on liability and quantum, to drawing up pleadings, instructing and questioning experts and witnesses and dealing with all case management issues including policy changes.

Health and Safety and Public Law

Elizabeth has represented clients in jury inquests at the Coroners Court. Elizabeth also has experience of drafting Opinions and pleadings on a range of judicial review claims and public procurement matters including the awarding of contracts by large public bodies and the appropriate tender procedures and selection criteria. Elizabeth has experience of advising in relation to asbestos maintenance and removal.
