John White’s retirement: Forty-five stellar years in Chambers

After forty-five years in Chambers, and nearly thirty as its Chief Clerk, John White has decided that the time will come next year to retire from Chambers. Having discussed this with Chambers, and with our full support, he has decided that his last day as Chief Clerk will be 31st May 2020.

“It has not been an easy decision” says John, “I have loved every minute of my time in these wonderful Chambers.  I have worked with some fantastic people – both members and our staff – and have taken real satisfaction and pride in the way that these Chambers have been transformed in my time here.  It is a very different place today than when I started as a nineteen-year old junior clerk in 1974.

I appreciate that none of this would have been possible without our clients.  Chambers is very lucky to have such a wide and loyal client-base.  I count myself fortunate to have been able to make so many close and long-lasting friends along the way. I am immensely grateful for that friendship. I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for all of the support that our clients have so kindly given to me, and to Chambers, over the years.

Please rest assured though that I will be working flat-out (as always!) up until that final day.  And that the service that you will receive from me, my staff and my eventual successor will not diminish in any way.   It is very important to me that our achievements continue long into the future.  And I am looking forward to reading about the successes of my Chambers for many years to come.”

“I want to express our profound gratitude for everything that John has done for all of us over the last forty-five years” says Charles Gibson QC, “He has poured his heart and soul into us and our practices.  He has been the most wonderful colleague and friend.  It was truly fitting – and came as no surprise to any of us – that his excellence was recognised by his peers when he was named the inaugural “Senior Clerk/Chief Executive of the Year” by the Legal 500 in 2014.

Our search for John’s successor is well underway in accordance with our structured and long-prepared succession plan.  The process will culminate in an appointment later in the year.  We have planned for a period of handover between John and the successful candidate so that the process is as smooth and seamless as possible. We will ensure that we maintain the high levels of client care that you have come to expect from Chambers.”
